Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Community Centre set up a pilot programme within their community centre in Woolwich to equip individuals with security system installation skills. Funded by Neighbourhood Renewal and the European Social Fund as part of the Greenwich local programme, this is a good example of a project which helped unemployed people move towards a job while at the same time producing a community benefit.
Fifteen beneficiaries over a period of six months have helped to install an entire security system learning about the basics of being an electrician; health and safety features, the basics of wiring a system, what is required for CCTV and alarm systems etc.
Two of the trainees have gained full time employment after the project, one is self employed and two others are undertaking electrician courses at Greenwich Community College. Several other volunteers continue to maintain and sustain the security system.
