Case studies - business support
Company:Charles Edward Brooke School
In 2005, as part of the Education and Youth Development programme, GLE oneLondon held a forum to discuss school needs regarding citizenship and the services the corporate and other sectors could offer. The forum resulted in a working cross sector working group (corporate sector, schools, and youth focused organisations) to look at ways which could add value to the curriculum subject (in this instance, Citizenship).
The schools identified the areas they most needed assistance. Legal Literacy, which is a large component of the Citizenship curriculum, was hailed as the main area where assistance was required. Once again a forum was held to highlight this need to various legal companies, and Clyde & Co were extremely generous in offering their services to assist the school. These volunteers underwent training on how to communicate with young people and understanding the school environment, which was delivered by the GLE oneLondon programme manager.
Over the course of one year, the volunteers from Clyde and Co. visited the Charles Edward Brooke School to facilitate legal literacy sessions for various classes.
“The classroom has been alive with people working together. It’s been great to see the young people excited by learning” Heather Osborne, Teacher Charles Edward Brooke School
“I found it interesting because we could share ideas…and they (volunteers) did not throw information at us for 50 minutes, they gave us an opportunity to talk” young person, Charles Edward Brooke School
“We felt appreciated because they (volunteers) took time from their work to talk to us about what is going on in the world” young person, Charles Edward Brooke School
“It was really interesting to hear the young people’s opinions. It’s different to what I normally do at university. It really is a very valuable experience.” Law student volunteer
“From a personal point of view, I get a lot out of it. It’s a very fulfilling experience.” Law student volunteer
“An important success point of the project was that both Clyde & Co and Charles Edward Brooke School were willing to listen to the needs and limitations of both organisations…and very importantly to the feedback from the young people” Lucille Ryan, GLE oneLondon.
